CHINAMPAS
2013

Little Village is a predominantly Mexican immigrant neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago. Its past industrial development left little green space in the area leading to a recent push to turn vacant lots into community gardens. For three consecutive summers, GHY worked with the community organization ENLACE to create and lead visual art workshops across these gardens, reimagining planters as chinampas—the floating gardens created by the Aztecs to grow crops without harming the environment.
