HERRERA
FAMILY
Jose de Jesus Herrera and Esperanza Cervantes raised their eight children in La Haciendita. While they owned land and grew crops, they still struggled to find consistent economic opportunities in the town. To provide for the family, Jose de Jesus migrated back and forth to the United States throughout the years, working in farms across Texas and California, and in Chicago’s factories. Unlike many families from town, the Herreras remained in La Haciendita. It was only after the children grew up and began their own families that some chose to permanently live in the U.S.—some migrated to Dallas, while others migrated to Chicago. Esperanza passed away in 1992; Jose de Jesus in 2021.
