Since 2008, the women of Stitches of the Soul have been quilting their personal narratives of family and culture into intricate quilts, creating a profound album of their lives.
The group, supported by the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, started from a workshop and has been meeting weekly ever since. The participants draw strength and wisdom from each other’s experiences and techniques, creating a vibrant community. They graciously welcome and instruct new members, including school-age children. Their story quilts address significant themes such as family celebrations, identity, daily life, immigration, and violence against women. This group has empowered its members through a range of activities, reunions, workshops, and exhibitions, providing a significant platform for expression and solidarity.
